Artful design rooted in consciousness,
curiosity, and integrity.

Citizen Artist

is a multidisciplinary design firm, working in interior and product design. We aspire to the ideal of using our capacity to create work whose process and product both effect positive change.

We embrace the axiom that good design makes the world a more beautiful place. We reimagine the traditional notion of designer as artist, expanding our perspective to a broader understanding of our role without compromising the core values of our art form. Through genuine exploration and collaboration, we see each commissioned project as an opportunity for empathetic engagement and response within our global network. We contribute to society through the built environment and the objects that occupy it in practical, evident, and sometimes small ways that truly respond to the needs of our clients and partners.

We perceive the process of design as inherently engaging, offering the possibility of creating new awareness, new understanding, new dialogue, and of encouraging in ourselves, our clients, and our collaborators alike, action on issues of resource, origin, health, choice, economics, and ecological and social impact. In this process we arrive at a mutual benefit of the work; the work expresses respect. It is our hope that peoples’ lives are affected.

Partnerships.

Founders.

Since 2007, visionary designers Rafael Kalichstein and Joshua Rose, along with their team, have brought sensitivity and sophistication to commissioned projects across the United States under the moniker FORM Design Studio. Originally drawing from their diverse backgrounds (Rafael, a former practitioner of holistic medicine and Joshua, an Emmy-Award-winning designer), the partners developed and refined a holistic approach to design, establishing the firm as a leading voice in the field and garnering frequent recognition among the most illustrious design publications.

In 2023, the team announced it would operate under the name Citizen Artist. The firm’s new identity serves as both an ideal to which the firm aspires and an homage to Kalichstein’s late father, pianist Joseph Kalichstein, himself a supreme citizen artist. With this incarnation, the firm re-introduces itself as an authority in the design space creating works guided by a distinct ethos. Kalichstein and Rose continue to lead the charge with a growing international team of exceptional human beings committed to the Citizen Artist mission.
